MEET IAN

GET TO KNOW YOUR INSTRUCTORS — RICHMOND

Our newest recruit in Richmond is ready to take the podium... if you haven't already had a chance to meet Ian, let's get to know him a little more now.

Join us Saturday 26th at 11:30am for Ian's FREE Community Ride!

Tell us a bit about your fitness background and how you found us here at Inspire!

I first started fitness diving into the realm of yoga when I was in the army in Singapore and through my time in university. Spin came along towards the end of uni and I absolutely did NOT fall in love at first ride, it was such a shocker that I was put off spin until I went for a friend’s community ride and fell in love with it then!

Fast forward a year, I pursued a Yoga Teacher Training and also ended up working front of house at XYCO Studio in Singapore. Somehow or rather ended up becoming a spin instructor at XYCO and the rest is really history! It’s been 3 solid years coaching spin and 2 with yoga and boy, do I love movement. I love exploring different classes all around with a student’s and teacher’s mindset. There’s an endless amount of things to learn from every single coach out there so I never gave up a chance to check out studios when I travel.

When I came to Melbourne for a holiday, INSPIRE was one of the studios that I checked out, and fast forward a year, I ended up being based here in Melbourne and after some ups and downs. I knew that I needed to keep on coaching and doing what I was passionate about and what fulfilled me, so here I am at INSPIRE!

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?

I actually went through a Pilates Instructor course 3 months ago and it may (or may not be) surprising that I’m now able to coach 3 different modalities of movement! Yoga, Spin and Pilates, a jack of all trades and I’m hoping to be a master of all three.

What makes your class ✨ special ✨?

Expected to be moved… in mind and body. The term “empowerment” is really the main objective of my class. What drives my classes is my passion to really share what being on that bike means to me and what it’s done for me. I always want riders to know what having the power to make choices on that bike feels like. To be able to decide to step into the  uncomfortable and make progress by leaps and bounds. Nothing beats knowing that YOU chose to do all THAT!

Having listened to music whether Pop, R&B, EDM, there are some tracks that simply will speak to you, move you and if I dare say even push you to give all that you’ve got. So if you’re looking for a coach who’s going to motivate the heaviest climbs and longest sprints out of you all while grooving to some great tunes, you know who’s class to book into.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by the people who show up in class. Alone, together. Once a week, everyday. Everyone has a story and no matter where they’ve come from and how… The decision to show up and effort that they push through with, will never cease to amaze me and inspire me to be a better coach day by day for them! You grow with your riders is what I always say!

What do you love about CYCLE?

It’s so all rounded. You get strength, you get speed. The best part is honestly the INSPIRE track for me. Big chance to motivate riders and amp them up for that finale sprint or simply have them ride through the track, letting them feel their feels.

Best piece of advice you’ve received on your fitness journey?

Not from my fitness journey but one piece of advice that I’ve carried on through my fitness journey is from my late grandmother. “If you’ll never try, how’d you ever know?” That has really challenged me as a yogi, a rider and a coach. If we’re too afraid of trying the unknown like adding on more resistance or going to that one particular class or trying out a new studio/instructor, how’d we know where we’re at with it? Whether we’d be missing out on something/someone great or not?

AND A FEW LITTLE EXTRAS...

Outside of Inspire, we will find you...

I’m a food tech graduate and you’ll probably find me in Woolworths (sorry, Coles!) looking at what’s “½ Price” and if there’s any new snack/food product on the shelves. Either that or at home in my kitchen, cooking on IG live.

Favourite time of day to work out?

AM, all day errday.

Climb or sprint?

Climbs. They bring me somewhere else in my mind and push my body so hard. They’re honestly the bane of my existence xo

The soundtrack of your life?

Everyday of My Life VIP MIX - Third Party

Guilty pleasure?

Sour Squirms / Snakes. You know if you know.

We can't wait to ride with Ian this month — book in with him!
